    GATEWAY SHRM PRESENTS:
    FMLA –Curbing Abuse

Review of recent NJ and federal court decisions of The Federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) entitles eligible employees to take up to 12* weeks of job-protected, unpaid leave each year for specified family and medical reasons. The law is complicated and contains many provisions that an employer must understand and implement…both to comply with the law and to avoid potential abuse by employees. This program will offer some practical suggestions on:

    Understanding the Basics

    Employee eligibility

    Reasons for a leave

    Leave duration

    Strategies for Fighting Abuse

    Establishing attendance and call-in procedures

    Communicating leave rights/obligations

    Medical certification - Recertification

    Managing the intermittent leave

*In some cases, 26 weeks of leave are protected
